During Bzyantine Empire the European side of Istanbul was named as Pera which meant “Opposite Side”.
However, Turkish name for our location is “Beyoglu” and there are many speculations about the origins of the word. The most common known is while Emperor Kanuni Sultan Süleyman ruled Ottoman Empire Turks named this area as Beyoğlu because Venice consulate Andre Gritti’s son Luigi Giritti resided in this area, and “Beyoglu” means a gentleman’s son. Beyoğlu has characteristic of many civilizations and this can be seen in its historical buildings, Mosques, Churches, Synagogues, Bell Tower and sounds of Azan.
